The Mililani Town Association will be sponsoring "Eat the Street" on March 17th from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Mililani Recreation Center #7. Red and Green Track Principal's Coffee Hour Set

MHS Summer School Update

For those who registered for Mililani High School Summer School PE Session 1 or 2 to be held here at Mililani Middle School, you have received your first choice. Session 1 registration is now closed; however, those still interested in participating in Session 2 are advised to register online as soon as possible as slots are filling up. Session 1 will begin on February 27.

Aloha Aina Earth Day Recycling Community Clean-Up and Fundraiser will be held at Mililani High School Gym Parking Lot on Saturday, February 4 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Feel free to drop off items for recycling. The following items, however will NOT be accepted: Tires, motor oil, paints, hazardous fluids, microwave ovens, gas tanks. Organizers are also limiting one TV per car.

2012 MHS Summer School PE Registration

Due to Mililani Middle School's unique school calendar, outgoing Grade 8 students who plan on attending Mililani High School next school will be offered the opportunity to take their Grade 9 physical education class requirement here at Mililani Middle. Two sessions will be offered to all Blue, Red, and Green Track Grade 8 students. The first session will run from late February to early April. The second session will run from April to late June.

Registration information will be posted to this blog in January with registration taking place soon after. Please check back here and at our school's web page for updates.

Because Yellow 8students will be off during the traditional summer, they will have theopportunity to register and attend summer school classes at theMililani High campus.

MHS 9th Grade Honors English Testing Results

Mililani Middle School does not provide loans for student meals. Students are given an updated balance by the lunchroom supervisors whenever their balance drops below $10.00. Thus, it is imperative students and parents maintain a proper balance in their school meal account. "Thank You Very Much" Awardees Honored

Did you know that we have a "Thank you very much!" recipient here at MMS? Our very own Carolyn Alameida received the award last week! Her student, Risa Askerooth (G8) wrote a beautiful thank you letter to her to win the award. Tiny Tadani and the OC 16 crew filmed her receiving it from the Lex Brodie representatives right here on campus. In addition, they were on KSSK's Perry and Price show Saturday morning. Risa read her well written letter of appreciation over the air. Congratulations to both of you!

Thank You ... Very Much! Award invites students in grades 4 -12 to submit a letter expressing their appreciation of someone who has influenced their life in a positive way. The “someone” may be a parent, teacher, or friend - anyone who has touched their life. Also, students are requested to think of others by choosing a charity or non- profit organization that will receive a donation in the winning student’s name. The winner’s letter will be published in The MidWeek and the student, teacher, and person thanked will be honored on the Perry & Price Breakfast Show on KSSK.

Recognition/Reward Activities:

• One student winner per month will have his/her photograph and work published in a full-page

article in The MidWeek and will be filmed by Tiny Tadani for Tiny TV.

• The student, teacher, and the person thanked will be honored at the KSSK Perry and Price

Breakfast Show.

Celebration Week, the Mililani Middle School Cross Country team would like to invite you to our annual Pursuing Victory With Honor Cross Country Invitational on Wednesday, October 26 at 8:30 a.m. Over 250 students from our community elementary schools will take part in this event promoting the Character Counts! pillars of Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. Our community sponsor Jamba Juice Mililani Town Center (Manager Tim Tamashiro) will again provide delicious frozen drinks to all participants! See you there!

Volleyball Team Results, Oct. 15

Grade 8 and Grade 7 Girls Volleyball teams continue their winning ways this past weekend. The Grade 7 girls (3-0) swept their counterparts from Wheeler Middle, while our Grade 8 were taken to three sets, coming out victorious to remain unbeaten this season. It was a different story for our boys as both the Grade 7(0-1) and Grade 8 (2-1) teams fell in 3 sets.

The MMS volleyball teams will play teams from Wahiawa Middle on Saturday, October 22 at Aiea High School. First serve at 9:45 a.m. See you there!

Blazer Pride Student Leaders Participate in Down Syndrome Awareness Activities

A big mahalo to the following Blazer Pride students: Elijah A., Jeremiah C., Micah G., Li’i H-L., Dean H., Shaelyn K., Josh M., Emily M., Haze-Lyn P., Ikona Sanchez, LBJ T., Kalena Y, and other student leaders.

During the month of September, these students recycled bottles and cans, as well as collected monetary donations for the October 1st Down Syndrome Awareness Buddy Walk sponsored by Hawaii Down Syndrome Congress. Thanks to all who contributed, Blazer Pride was able to earn a grand total of $507.98. Please continue to spread the aloha spirit!

Speaking of aloha spirit…the Blazer Pride Ohana also volunteered their services during the October 1st Buddy Walk for Down Syndrome Awareness held at Kapiolani Park. Thank you to Quincie F., Kekoa H., Shaelyn K., Emily M., Haze-Lyn P., Mei-ling P., and Kalena Y. who touched the hearts of our Down Syndrome buddies. A big mahalo also goes out to our chaperones: Mr. Jeff Horstman, Ms. Shannon Keaton, Mr. Joey Teruya, and Mrs. Candace Teruya.

These students cheered for the football team, band, and cheerleaders, as well as cleaned part of the football stadium. Blazer Volleyball Teams Win

The Blazer 7th grade girls, 8th grade girls, and 8th grade boys volleyball teams won their respective matches against teams from Aliamanu Intermediate. The 7th grade girls won in straight sets, 21-9, 21-7, as did the 8th grade boys, 21-8 and 21-14. The 8th grade girls took the first set against the Lady Panthers, 21-15. The Lady Panthers roared back in the second set, 13-21, and lead early in the third set 4-0 before the Blazers caught fire. The Blazers pulled ahead for good at 11-10, holding on for a tough win, 15-13.

The Blazer teams would like to thank the MMS ohana for all of their support, especially MMS staff members Mr. Oyama (Tech), Mr. Kardash (Red 7), Ms. Miyamae (Yellow 7), Ms. Pang (Reading), and Mr. Tamai (Teen Care)!

The volleyball teams will take a week off then will be back in action on Saturday, October 15 against teams from Wheeler Middle. We look forward to the debut of our 7th grade boys team. Matches start at 11:15 a.m. See you there. Go Blazers!

As part of their studies on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch located in the Pacific Ocean, The MMS Tree Huggers organized The Great Campus Clean Up on Saturday, September 18, 2011. They along with members from the MMS community spent the day beautifying the campus and educating all on the need to keep items such as plastic bottles, aluminum cans, candy wrappers, and other pieces of trash out of our school drainage system so they don't end up in our island drain system and surrounding streams and ocean. Girls Volleyball Teams Win Opener

Both the seventh and 8th grade girls volleyball teams won their matches against Aiea Intermediate at Moanalua High School Gymnasium today. The seventh grade girls won in straight sets while the 8th grade girls came roaring back from a set down to win in three. Congratulations to our Blazer Wahine! Safety Walking To and From School

Although Mililani is a very pedestrian-friendly community, we'd like to again ask our MMS parents to review safety tips with our children who walk to and from school.

Walk on sidewalks or on the left shoulder of the road facing traffic.
Instruct children to always walk with a friend, if possible.
Always walk directly to the destination; never take shortcuts or go into isolated areas (such as the Ravine Park).
If being followed or harassed, walk away or in the opposite direction and/or towards people.
If available, carry a phone in case there's a need to dial an emergency number.

Change in Bus Pass Policy

Effective October 11, 2011, all students in all grades who fail to display a valid bus pass or present a valid bus coupon in the afternoons will be refused a ride home. All students who attempt to board a school bus without a valid bus pass or coupon will be reported to the School Administrator. Fundraising Opportunity for MMS Parents

As funding for our school continues to decline, MMS continues to look for other funding opportunities to maintain a rich and vibrant educational program. American Savings Bank has invited MMS to participate in its Bank for Education program. This opportunity gives MMS a chance at over $50,000 in cash. The Bank for Education program will start on September 26, 2011 and will end on December 15, 2011. UH-DOE Survey Grade 8 Consent Letters Coming Home

With the approval of the Department of Education, the University of Hawaii will be surveying students in the 7th and 8th grade. This survey is being done as part of a research study about the effects of exposure to substance use in movies and advertising on adolescents.

Parent Consent Letters will be sent home beginning with Red Track students on September 1, 2011, offering your child a chance to participate in this survey. When your child brings home this letter, please review, sign and return the letter indicating your preference for participation.
